There are basically three different kinds of Optical whitening agents which are based on Sulfonic group:
Disulfonic: It has basically two groups of sulfonic acid and it is very effective for hydrophobic fiber, such as wool, silk, and nylon application which is in Acidic PH.
Tetrasulfonic: It has basically four sulfonic groups and along with this it also has good solubility and it is ideal for paper application, cellulosic fiber at alkaline PH or neutral.
Hexanesulfonic: It has basically six sulfonic groups and it also has an excellent solubility for the purpose of surface coating applications such as paper which is used in photography and a number of things as well.
